Ted Brown

About Me

Ted Brown is the ninth child (a twin) born to the late Seward C. Brown, Sr., and
Mary “Mae Hanna” Brown of the Donnelly Community in Hemingway, SC. He
attended schools in both Lake City, and Hemingway, SC, and is a High School
graduate of Hemingway High School. A graduate of the University of South
Carolina (Columbia, SC), and Durham Technical Institute, (Durham, NC), Ted
completed an Optical Fellowship at W.K. Kellogg Eye Institute at the University of
Michigan, Ann Arbor, MI. After college, Ted opened the first of several
independently (African –American) owned optical offices, Georgetown Eyeglass
Center, in Georgetown, SC.

In his profession as an Optician, Ted has been South Carolina licensed since 1989,
and has served as a member of the National Contact Lens Test Writers’
Committee for the National Contact Lens Examiners Board. Ted has been a
business owner for over 30 years, and is known by many as “Ted Brown, The
Eyeglass Man”.

In his community, Ted has served in many positions, including: 

SC House Representative, South Carolina House of Representatives District 103, representing Georgetown County, Hemingway area of Williamsburg County, portions of Conway and the Bucksport area of Horry County (elected four times);

Chairman of the Head Start Policy Council for Horry, Georgetown, and Williamsburg Counties; Lieutenant Governor for Kiwanis International, District 20, covering 20 cities; member, Salvation Army Board –Florence area (covering 5 counties).  Ted especially enjoys working to improve the lives of young people, and has been a youth basketball coach, youth mentor, and along with his wife, Athena, awarded financial scholarships to students from local area high schools.

In his ministry, Ted has created and hosted the radio program, “Perspective: A
Review of the Sunday School Lesson”, a television broadcast, “Sunday Morning
With Ted Brown”, and the radio program, “Men Talk: Brothers talking to

Brothers”, a radio ministry devoted to men and men’s issues. Ted has also served
as a church pastor in Williamsburg County. Ted and his wife are members of
Greater Bethel AME Church in Georgetown, SC.

In organization activities, Ted is a life member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.
He is also a 32 nd degree Mason.

In his personal life, Ted loves to read, and work outside in his yard. Ted considers
himself to be a critical thinker, a lover of people, and a “doer”.

In his family life, Ted is married to Athena Calhoun Brown, and has one daughter,
Alexis, who is a registered nurse. Ted and his wife live in the West End Community
of Georgetown, SC.

Ted’s favorite scripture is Romans 8:28, “And we know that all things work
together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to
his purpose.”

As a South Carolina State House Representative (SC District 103), I went to bat for you….

Getting $500,000 from the State of South Carolina to create and establish the Choppee Health Center in Georgetown, SC, required me to go to bat for you. Getting money for the Georgetown and Williamsburg County DHEC buildings required me to go to bat for you.  Getting state money for small business loans for our residents required me to go to bat for you. Getting state money for paved roads, water and sewer for Browns Ferry, Woodlands, Sampit, industry, and other areas required me to go to bat for you. Getting state money for recreation and community  facilities in Hemingway, Pee Dee, Conway, Bucksport, and other areas required me to go to bat for you. Getting state money for the library in Hemingway, SC, required me to go to bat for you.

I humbly ask for your vote to bring MORE to SC Senate District 32, because

Ways To Help
